Fatal Attraction: Birds and Wind Turbines

(from KQED's QUEST Science Blog)

California's largest wind farm cluster at Altamont Pass unintentionally kills golden eagles, burrowing owls and other threatened birds. Now, wind companies, scientists and environmentalists are working to bird-proof these massive wind farms.

very interesting, Jason, feel bad for the raptors. Helen

Indeed, Helen. We must not forget the smaller creatures as well...song birds, migratory birds, and bats can easily meet the same fate, leaving less (if any) of a trace. It's important that we study and understand the impact wind farms will have on the surrounding wildlife before they're installed.

Wouldn't you think that the scientists, companies, inventors, etc. would have had thought of this before they installed the turbines at Altamont? I'm familiar with this as I live in California and just cringed when they were installed. Here's a link for you: http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/swcbd/Programs/bdes/altamont/altamont.html
Caution, it's not for the weak of heart. Great post. Wish you well.

You would have thought so, Morgan. Unfortunately it was a lot easier and cheaper for companies not to do adequate, if any, environmental impact reports before beginning a project like Altamont. Thanks to environmental organizations like Audubuon, wind projects are getting more public visibiltiy and more comprehensive studies are being required, but we still have a long way to go. Thanks for the great link!

Wow, this is an amazing video! Thanks for sharing! Found you via Stumble!
