- US government cuts back nearly 40% of critical habitat for the threatened Western Snowy Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus). Only 28 major nesting areas remain for the estimated 2,600 Snowy Plovers. The final decision was made in the office of Secretary of Interior Gale Norton.
- Nevada lawmakers focusing on preserving Mount Charleston and Walker Lake. Mount Charleston is suffering from overcrowding. Walker Lake's lack of fresh water is affecting fish and threatening the important migratory-bird sanctuary. "We need to get involved rather than wash our hands of it and say it's a federal problem," said Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas. Since the Bush Administration keeps stripping habitat protections, we need more states to start thinking this way.
- Threatened Coastal California Gnatcatcher (Polilptila californica californica) population increasing with help from 125 acres of restored coastal sage scrub at Trump National golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Breeding pairs of gnatcatchers have increased from 4 to 15 and more than 205 fledglings have been raised since the restoration began in the late 1990s.
- Volunteers needed by Operation WildLife in northeast Kansas to help in the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned animals. Check out their positions and fill out an application.
- Two Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) released in Montana. The Montana Raptor Conservation Center successfully rehabilitated an immature eagle hit by a car three months ago and an adult electrocuted in March.
- NASA using laser technology to identify and monitor wildlife habitats from the air. Using Light Detecting And Ranging (LiDAR), they can take measurements on a forest's canopy and get information on tree height and biomass, the amount of living material in a given area.
- US Fish and Wildlife's approval of building permit to cause loss of 93 acres of habitat for the threatened Florida Scrub Jay ((Aphelocoma coerulescens)) in southwestern Marion County, Florida.
